PIXBAE, PIFA, PIBA, PISBA, CHONTADURO, PEJIBAY, PEJIBAYE, PUPUNHA

The geographic distribution of this fruit is extensive; the northern limit is in Honduras, and the southern limit is in Bolivia and the south of Brazil. It also indicates its presence in some islands in the Antilles, especially Trinidad.

According to its ample distribution, the fruit receives different names. It is called Pijuayo and Chonta in Peru; Chontaduro and Pijuayo in Ecuador; Chontaduro, Cachipay, Casipaes and Pijibay in Colombia; Pijuayo, Pichiguao, Pijiguao, Macana, Manacilla and Periguao in Venezuela; Parepon in French Guyana; Amana in Surinam; Pupunha and pirijao in Brazil; Tembe and Tembé de Castilla in Bolivia; Pejibaye, Pijuayo, Pijibay and Pixbae in Costa Rica and Nicaragua; Pixbae, Pifa, Piba and Pijuayo in Panamá; Peach Palm and Pewa in Trinidad; and Peach Palm in other English speaking countries.

Today, with the appearance of new markets and new consumer habits, as well as the high alimentary dependency in some countries in South and Central America , the necessity of developing crops of "forgotten" species and native to the American continent becomes evident. The Pixbae is one of those species, which has a high potential for production of food, wood and fiber.
